Expedition Everest — Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

I’m taking over Tricia’s blog today while she has Returned to Disney, so let’s pop over to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park for a wild adventure on one of my favorite attractions in all of Walt Disney World Resort. Expedition Everest—Legend of the Forbidden Mountain was added to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2006, bringing a second weinie to the Park and giving thrill seekers a reason to visit. It also helped reinforce the Park’s claim that it is most definitely “NotAZoo.” After all, what zoo features a 199-foot tall mountain range, a 50-mph train, and a real Yeti? Disney Parks weinies are the things that are symbolic of each park – Cinderella Castle, Tree of Life, Spaceship Earth are some others. The word is one of Walt’s own! He described those things/buildings/symbols as being as integral to a theme park as hot dogs (or as he called them, weinies). This...

Kill Refurb Marry Aerial Spinner Rides

In the middle of the December crazies, one of my blogging buddies invited me to join the newest Disney blog hop, Kill Refurb Marry, hosted by Mouse on the Mind. The mere thought of adding one more thing to my schedule in December made me laugh hysterically, but I promised to get on board in January, so here we are! This month’s theme is Aerial Spinner Rides. The theory is to choose three attractions – one that just needs to die, one that could use a touch-up, and one that is perfect just the way it is. Before I get started, let me get one thing out of the way: All three of these rides are essentially the same attraction. You ride in a circle, you control whether you go up and down, and they’re aimed at the low-thrill crowd. So what I’m really looking at here is the theming...

Kilimanjaro Safaris at Night

There has been quite a bit of chatter around the blogosphere lately about the new AVATAR themed land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and to be honest, I didn’t pay a lot of attention. I didn’t see AVATAR in the theaters. From what I heard, it just wasn’t that good. (If I heard wrong, I’m sure you’ll let me know, right?) But this little tidbit from the Disney Parks Blog post caught my attention: The park will introduce more nighttime entertainment as well, including live performers on Discovery Island and a new nighttime version of the Kilimanjaro Safaris. (Read the full post here.) For most park guests, the only time you can see the animals is during the day, when they’re least active. If you’re willing to get up early, there are currently two ways you can do the Kilimanjaro Safaris while the animals are still relatively...

Kilimanjaro Safaris on (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

It’s Wednesday – already! Over at Focused on the Magic, Wednesday is always (almost) wordless, of course. This week’s theme is “Family #8221; It was a tough one for me. With 4 kids, a mix of boys and girls, and two adults, it’s hard to come up with something everybody genuinely loves. And then I remembered Kilimanjaro Safaris! As we’re planning our dining reservations for our return to disney trip, we each chose one restaurant that was a must-do. As we were tossing around ideas, one of the kids piped up with “The Safari Breakfast!” Instant agreement, all the way around the table. We simply could not go to Walt Disney World without doing the Safari Breakfast. It begins with the early 8:00 seating of Donald’s Safari Breakfast at Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom: That’s me pre-coffee by the way, trying to keep those two little boys from completely...
