Spirit of Aloha: My Most Memorable Disney Meal

Welcome to those of you joining me from The Disney Point and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 2nd stop on our Magical Blogorail. I’m filling in on the Magical Blogorail Black line this week. We’re discussing our most memorable Disney meals.

Usually, when you think of something that is really memorable, it’s either wonderful or utterly horrid. There is no middle ground with memorable! The Spirit of Aloha dinner show was definitely memorable for our family.

First, the horrid – let’s get that out of the way early. It was held late at night, so the kids were already pretty tired. Then there was the seemingly interminable wait to be seated. Boredom, check. I have quite a few out-of-focus pictures like this one, which were taken more to entertain a two year old than to capture memories!

Then there was the actual show. It was broken into two parts. The first half was an ode to the cheesiest dinner theater you ever saw. Maybe it’s just me, but bad theater isn’t cute or kitschy, it’s just bad. I expected a whole lot better from Disney.

Ok, on to the wonderful!

First, the food. If you’ve been hanging around Return to Disney for a while, you know I’m a total food geek. The food at Spirit of Aloha was amazing. Definitely worth the two meal credits, even without the show. The pork ribs were perfectly done, and the chocolate lava cake was enough to make me forgive Disney for the atrocious first half of the show.

Speaking of the entertainment….The second half of the show was a complete turnaround. Instead of some thin plot and bad acting, we were treated to an exhibition of native polynesian dancing. The kids were just as enthralled as the adults. As soon as the native music replaced the pop music, the whining stopped. I could sit back and really enjoy the show with my family, because I wasn’t on the edge of my seat ready to head off a meltdown. And really, who wouldn’t be fascinated watching this guy run around the stage with fire?

So there you have it – good and bad, the Spirit of Aloha was definitely my most memorable Disney meal! Would I do it again? Absolutely. Knowing that I can ignore the first half of the show because there are much better things to come, and the amazing food, makes it all worth while.

We haven’t been to the Spirit of Aloha in a long time (maybe since the 80s!). We might have to take the kids to that. I think they would love to see the dancers, well, at least Hayley and Emily would like that part!
