Disney World Without the Kids

Lately, I’ve been in the early planning stages of our next vacation. Actually, our next two vacations! We’re hoping to pull off a long weekend without the kids sometime in early 2013, and a longer family vacation next Fall. Planning two separate vacations is a balancing act between budget wrangling and deciding where we want to go. We looked at a cruise for our solo trip, or possibly an adults-only resort somewhere in the Caribbean, and while those options were certainly enticing – and the brochures breathtaking! – we decided to go back to Walt Disney World. Just the two of us, without the kids! (Can you tell, I’m a little excited about that prospect?) Why go to Disney World for our adults-only vacation? Why drop our kids off at the grandparents’ only to go somewhere where we’ll be surrounded by other people’s kids? There are a lot of great...

Let the Countdown Begin!

Welcome to those of you joining me from Disney on Wheels and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 3rd stop on our Magical Blogorail. I’m taking a second ride on the Blogorail this month, filling in on the Orange Loop. You’ve done that, right? Just sat and rode the Monorail – “One more time around the World, please!” Today we’re sharing the ways that we count down to a Disney vacation. For me, it’s all about the planning and organizing. It always has been, from the time I was little. I prepare for a trip by making lists. Lots of lists. I remember, back in 3rd grade, having so many lists in my notebook that I forgot what all I had already figured out…in frustration (and because it was more interesting than whatever my teacher was going on about….) I stacked up all my lists and made...

How Much Does a Disney Vacation Cost?

A Disney vacation is a wonderful, magical experience. But a lot of planning goes into making it something unforgettable – and the first task is always “Can we afford it?” There are a lot of ways to cut the cost of a Disney vacation (later this month I’m reviewing Strategies for Paying for Disney – an entire book devoted to paying for a Disney vacation!), but the fact is that most of us can’t just sneak the cost of a Disney getaway into our normal monthly budget. Unfortunately that can prevent us from even trying – the knowledge that Disney is expensive. It might even seem out of reach, so we don’t even try. Today I’d like to answer the top 5 Disney budget questions that I hear all the time: Q: Just how much does a Disney vacation cost? A: That all depends on the options you choose...

Shhh – Don’t Tell the Kids!

Ok, I have to share. Thanks to some really exciting budget developments (yes, I just used the words “exciting” and “budget” in the same sentence), it looks like we finally have tentative dates for our next Disney trip! Ok, that’s not precisely true. We have tentative dates for our next TWO Disney trips!! Have we told the kids? Absolutely not. Things could still fall through. And besides, I like the idea of surprising them 🙂 But here’s the real secret: the first of those two trips is grown-ups only! Just us, for three nights early next year. We’ve had a couple of overnights on our own, but we’ve never really taken a vacation together. Our honeymoon was nice, but we were young and on a pretty small budget. That’s life. This trip might be short, but not exactly low-budget. I’ll fill you in on all the fun planning details...
