Special Events at Walt Disney World

Image courtesy of Heidi Strawser. Thank you! With summer winding down and Fall in the air, life is starting to gear up toward the holiday season. First there’s Halloween, then we go right into Thanksgiving, and Christmas, not to mention birthdays and apple picking and a handful of other traditions. Disney is no different – after a summer of just being Disney, they’re gearing up too. There are several big special events at Walt Disney World over the next few months: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on select nights starting tomorrow, September 11 through November 2. Epcot International Food & Wine festival starts September 28 and runs through November 12. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party starts as soon as Halloween ends, running from November 9 through December 21. Holidays Around the World at Epcot happens between November 23 and December 30. You get the idea! These are the major...

“When Can We Go Back to Disney?”

I hear this question at least three or four times a week: “Mom, when can we go back to Disney?” When we went in 2010, Princess was two. (Don’t ever let anyone tell you not to take a toddler or preschooler to Disney because “they won’t remember it #8221; Oh yes they will! Princess Beth is four now, and she hasn’t forgotten a thing.) Unfortunately, I don’t have a solid answer for her. We’re working on our next trip, but I don’t have dates set. I know how things should work out, but let’s face it, a lot could still go wrong and derail our plans. Part of me wants to include the kids in the planning process. Especially for the older ones, it’s a good lesson on budgeting, saving for the things you want, etc. It might also make it a lot easier to say no when they want...

Test Drive DVC

When we went to Walt Disney World the first time, I swear every single time I turned around a cast member was giving my kids stickers advertising DVC. And they wore them proudly! Why Test Drive DVC? We declined the DVC tour. After all, we were too smart to get taken in by some timeshare scam! But lately….I’ll admit, DVC is incredibly tempting. I’m a little nervous that the suites will feel too much like a rental house, not enough like a resort. On the other hand, putting a large family in a two-bedroom villa would be a lot more comfortable than cramming everybody into a hotel room – even the family suites at the value resorts. So – we’re going to test drive DVC by renting points from a current DVC member. This will let us really see what a DVC vacation is like, before we commit to a...

Disney Dining Plan Worth It?

With rumors about the Fall Free Dining Plan Promotion flying around the blogosphere, questions about the dining plan can’t be far behind. The big one is always “Is the Disney Dining Plan worth it?” (of course, if Disney is giving it away, it’s definitely worth it – but what if you can’t travel during the dates of this promotion?) The Disney Dining Plan can be confusing, with three options to choose from that cover a wide variety of restaurants, snack carts, and dining experiences around the Walt Disney World Resort. It’s also not cheap, adding several hundred dollars to your vacation package total. The big question, of course, is “Is the Disney Dining Plan worth the money?” Here’s how our family came to the decision to buy the Disney Dining Plan, and why we’ll keep buying it – although if you’re on the fence, taking advantage of the Free Dining...

Choosing Our Resort

Lately, I’ve been in the early planning stages of our next two vacations. Early next year (or possibly late this year, if I can work it out!) we’ll spend a long weekend at Walt Disney World without the kids. Crazy, huh? Then later next year we’ll do a big family trip. The big question I need to answer right now is “which resort?” For our family trip, I’m just looking for something with enough space to accomodate a family of 6. While I’ve always been dubious about the value resorts, the Art of Animation does look interesting, and doesn’t seem to be as gaudy as the other value resorts. It may work for us. For our solo trip, however, I’m looking for something nice. We stayed at the Port Orleans, Riverside in 2010, and it was beautiful. I’d like to stay somewhere else next time, to explore somewhere new....
