Affording a Disney Vacation

Let’s be honest: A Disney vacation is not cheap. It’s not something most of us can do on a whim, especially if you have a large family. And there will always be something more important to spend that money on. That’s why it’s taken us three years to book our “Return to Disney” trip. This week I’m featuring a series of posts dedicated to helping save for that Disney vacation you’ve been dreaming of. Affording a Disney vacation isn’t always easy, and sometimes it’s just not possible. But sometimes it’s not so out of reach as it seems. The first time we took the family to Walt Disney World, it wasn’t because we had planned and saved for it. We afforded it because an opportunity dropped into my lap. My agent called me with a book project that was already 6 months behind schedule, the original author had quit,...

Preparing for a Disney Vacation with Kids with Autism

Welcome to those of you joining me from Magical Mouse Schoolhouse and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 2nd stop on our Magical Blogorail. This month we’re sharing our tips for preparing for a Disney vacation. Specifically, I’d like to share my tips for preparing a child with autism for a Disney vacation. (For those of you with typically developing kids – don’t leave! Most of the techniques that are essential for ASD kids also work really well with neurotypical ones too.) As a Mom, I would love to surprise my kids with a trip to Walt Disney World. I daydream about packing them all in the car under false pretenses, only to casually remark as we get on the Interstate “Oh – yeah, our meeting is in Orlando. Mickey and Minnie are expecting #8221; Unfortunately, in real life that kind of stunt might not go...

Disney Vacation Club Sweepstakes Trial Membership

In November, Disney announced the Disney Vacation Club Sweepstakes game in which you could win a 3-year trial DVC membership. You can play as often as you want, but you can only gain a maximum of 10 entries between now and January 31, 2013. Disney will randomly draw one winner, whose accumulated points will be converted into real DVC points that will renew annually for three years. Nice! We’ve been on the fence about Disney Vacation Club for a while now. On paper, it seems like a pretty good deal, and we really love Disney vacations, but the up-front costs are pretty high, and if we decide to buy DVC, we’d rather pay cash. So…we’ll keep discussing and saving for it. Winning a three-year trial would certainly help us make that decision! But so would the ability to purchase a shorter trial membership. A typical Disney Vacation Club membership...

Older Kids, New Possibilities at Walt Disney World

Welcome to those of you joining me from Magical Mouse Schoolhouse and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 3rd stop on our Magical Blogorail. This month we’re discussing that one thing we are looking forward to on our next Disney trip. I started writing this blog post during our first Disney trip, before I had any idea I would even start a Disney blog! We only had 4 1/2 days, not nearly enough time to do everything, and spent a lot of our time making mental notes of things to do on our next trip. On that first trip, our kids were 8, 6, 5, and 2. They’re older – and taller! – now, so one of the things I’m really looking forward to is being able to enjoy more of the attractions together, instead of one parent taking the kids on the big rides while the...

DVC Decision Points

Last week, in the midst of all the normal chaos and craziness, my phone rang. It was Disney Vacation Club. (I know, because I have their number in my contacts list. Yeah…there’s this really fine line between geek and stalker….) They’ve called me a couple of times, and to be honest, I’ve let it go to voicemail. Reality is, right now DVC is outside of our budget. But . . . with a little bit of pixie dust, that could all be changing soon. We’ve got some pretty big stuff in the works, and if any of it works out, it will be a game changer. So I answered the phone this time. Call it an act of faith. They called to follow up because I had registered for this webcast on DVC with Samantha Brown. Ok, I was wallowing! I get to do that sometimes 🙂 After the...
