Affording Disney: Shop Smarter – with a Giveaway!

When we go to Walt Disney World, we don’t follow the usual rules for making a Disney vacation affordable. We get the Deluxe Dining Plan (yes, I know . . . you can eat a lot cheaper without it). We spring for the “expensive” package at Bibbiti Bobbiti Boutique, when there are any number of YouTube videos that show you how to dress up your daughter in your room for a lot less. And the only reason I got talked into a value resort was because Art of Animation was all about the art of Disney. I’ll be the first to admit: I have expensive tastes. Unfortunately, I also have a large family and a budget that doesn’t usually allow for that type of extravagance. We’ve chosen to be more economical at home in order to buy ourselves a few indulgences on vacation. Sometimes that means giving up things...

Budgeting for a Disney Vacation

In the first post in this series, I shared how we afforded our first Disney vacation. Waiting for a windfall to come along isn’t a great way to plan your next trip! But that’s what we did, because, honestly, we’re just not that great with money. It’s such an emotionally charged thing. I hate dealing with it. But after the second or third time that we thought another windfall was in the works, and then it fizzled out, my husband and I finally had enough. We couldn’t keep dealing with the stress of our broken money management habits. We had to figure out some way of budgeting for a Disney vacation. So we went looking for a new way to budget. I looked at Dave Ramsey. So many people have recommended his products and seminars. But I really disliked the heavy-handed morality that seems to be so integral to his...

Affording a Disney Vacation

Let’s be honest: A Disney vacation is not cheap. It’s not something most of us can do on a whim, especially if you have a large family. And there will always be something more important to spend that money on. That’s why it’s taken us three years to book our “Return to Disney” trip. This week I’m featuring a series of posts dedicated to helping save for that Disney vacation you’ve been dreaming of. Affording a Disney vacation isn’t always easy, and sometimes it’s just not possible. But sometimes it’s not so out of reach as it seems. The first time we took the family to Walt Disney World, it wasn’t because we had planned and saved for it. We afforded it because an opportunity dropped into my lap. My agent called me with a book project that was already 6 months behind schedule, the original author had quit,...

Disney Dining Plan Worth It?

With rumors about the Fall Free Dining Plan Promotion flying around the blogosphere, questions about the dining plan can’t be far behind. The big one is always “Is the Disney Dining Plan worth it?” (of course, if Disney is giving it away, it’s definitely worth it – but what if you can’t travel during the dates of this promotion?) The Disney Dining Plan can be confusing, with three options to choose from that cover a wide variety of restaurants, snack carts, and dining experiences around the Walt Disney World Resort. It’s also not cheap, adding several hundred dollars to your vacation package total. The big question, of course, is “Is the Disney Dining Plan worth the money?” Here’s how our family came to the decision to buy the Disney Dining Plan, and why we’ll keep buying it – although if you’re on the fence, taking advantage of the Free Dining...

How Much Does a Disney Vacation Cost?

A Disney vacation is a wonderful, magical experience. But a lot of planning goes into making it something unforgettable – and the first task is always “Can we afford it?” There are a lot of ways to cut the cost of a Disney vacation (later this month I’m reviewing Strategies for Paying for Disney – an entire book devoted to paying for a Disney vacation!), but the fact is that most of us can’t just sneak the cost of a Disney getaway into our normal monthly budget. Unfortunately that can prevent us from even trying – the knowledge that Disney is expensive. It might even seem out of reach, so we don’t even try. Today I’d like to answer the top 5 Disney budget questions that I hear all the time: Q: Just how much does a Disney vacation cost? A: That all depends on the options you choose...
