How David Met Sarah: A Special Love Story

Sometimes the most ordinary things in the world are the most beautiful – it just takes a special person to show it. Much of what I write about here are ordinary things: a family vacation, a ride at an amusement park. It took some very special kids to show me how amazing, how beautiful those things can be. How David Met Sarah is the story of the most ordinary, beautiful thing in the world: boy meets girl and they fall in love. It’s a story as old as humanity itself. What makes this story beautiful are the characters. David is a 24 year old man with Down Syndrome. He first notices Sarah, “the girl of his dreams,” in the diner where he eats breakfast every day. Like many young men, he spends the next several weeks in a fog trying to figure out how to meet her, how to...

Space Mountain – A Galaxy of Twists, Turns, and Drops!

Welcome to those of you joining me from My Dreams of Disney and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the final stop on our Magical Blogorail. For this very special edition, our kids are taking over the Blogorail, and sharing their favorite ride or attraction at Disney parks. Today my oldest son, Will, talks about his favorite ride: Space Mountain! Space Mountain’s awesome! If I had to explain it in one word it would be: ZOOM! I really like the futuristic looking train, but you’ll never guess how fast it goes! 3o mph. Not the fastest I must admit. But it feels like you’re going warp speed. The train it self  looks like a spaceship. The track seems to take you on a joyride through the galaxy. First you go under a control tower. Then you go through a blue #8217;s when the fun begins. Then suddenly you’re literally dropped into a galaxy of twists, turns, and drops! Even the...

Top 5 Dark Rides at Disney World

Sometimes we all need a break. For kids – and adults! – with sensory integration disorder, theme parks can be overwhelming. On Monday, I discussed my top 5 spinning rides for sensory seekers. Today I’m going in the other direction and giving you my top 5 dark rides for sensory breaks at Disney World. These are perfect when your child is overwhelmed and needs a sensory break from all the colors, movement, and visual stimulus of the parks. Pirates of the Caribbean: Guests float slowly through several scenes of pirate life. This is the attraction that inspired the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, which in turn has influenced the ride. Look carefully and you’ll find Captain Jack Sparrow! There are a few small drops, but overall this is a tame ride. The gentle swaying of the boats on the water is soothing for the child in sensory overload....
